GCL and Geomembrane Composite Action: When HDPE geomembrane is laid tightly against GCL, even with minor membrane damage, GCL effectively blocks seepage paths due to its extremely low permeability coefficient (k≈10⁻¹¹ m/s) and water-swelling properties, resulting in significantly better seepage prevention performance than single materials.

Leachate Collection Layer (LCRS): Typically a composite structure of geonet and nonwoven geotextile, this requires transmissivity calculations to ensure stable drainage capacity under high normal stress conditions.

In coastal or alluvial plain areas, soft soils have high water content and high compressibility. A professional solution is to use PVD (Pulsed Vacuum Dioxide) combined with vacuum pressure.

Radial Consolidation Theory: Unlike natural vertical drainage, PVD transforms the drainage path from a vertical distance of tens of meters to a horizontal distance of only a few centimeters (flowing towards the drainage board).

Smear Effect: During installation, the soil around the drainage board is disturbed, reducing its permeability. Professional design must account for the diameter of the smear zone and the disturbance coefficient; otherwise, the actual consolidation rate will be much slower than the theoretical value.

Well Resistance: When the drainage board is very long (over 25m), the flow capacity limitation of the board core itself must be considered.

In steep slope and retaining wall engineering, Geogrid enhances the overall strength and stability of the soil through interlocking. The design must consider the creep reduction factor (RFcr) and determine the long-term design strength (Tal) based on the PET, PP, or HDPE material. Simultaneously, a pull-out test should be conducted to determine the effective anchorage length, with parameters including the interaction coefficient and the effect of normal stress. Furthermore, a key risk in retaining wall engineering often lies in the connection strength between the geogrid and the panel, which must be verified through specialized connection tests.

Key Challenge: Slope Stability

In site closure systems, the interface friction angle of the geomembrane surface is crucial.

Textured Geomembrane: To prevent the cover soil from sliding down the membrane surface, a textured membrane with a roughened surface must be used.

Interlayer Shear Strength: Engineers must test the frictional characteristics between the soil-geotextile-geomembrane layers using a large-scale direct shear tester. If the slope is too steep, geocells may be introduced to encapsulate the vegetation.
