How the Geocell Confinement System Works

After expansion on-site, the HDPE geocell forms interconnected honeycomb-like cells filled with crushed stone, gravel, or soil. Under traffic loading, the infill material is laterally confined inside each cell, creating a semi-rigid slab effect.

This mechanism converts vertical traffic pressure into horizontal confinement resistance, effectively increasing modulus stiffness and reducing differential settlement. Compared with conventional unreinforced aggregate layers, geocell-reinforced systems provide significantly better load distribution performance.

In heavy-duty applications such as mining roads and container yards, we generally recommend larger welding distances combined with higher cell structures to maximize confinement efficiency and aggregate interlock performance.
